Choosing A Wedding Photographer
What’s the point of having a fancy cake and spending thousands of dollars on a dress when don’t have the right photographer? Having your cousin take pictures of your wedding on their iPhone is not something you want to settle for on your big day.
In this week’s newsletter, we are giving you tips on choosing the best photographer for your wedding day! We will also include some of our preferred photographers who have special rates for My Party Queen Clients.
Photographs aren’t things you can hear, smell, taste or even see at first—you don’t really know what you’re getting until the job is done. You can look at a photographer’s work but it takes careful research and selectiveness regarding professional skills, artistic style, and personal demeanor.
Keep these tips in mind when looking for your wedding photographer
- What’s the style you are looking for: Get inspired! Spend time finding imagery you love, from décor shots to a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed. Once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, try to figure out what draws you to them specifically and dissect what feels most authentic to you and your partner.
2. How many hours of coverage are included: You want your photographer to be there for your full wedding day! This begins from the moment you are getting dressed until after you make your grand exit from the reception. Packages will vary but most include about 6 to 12 hours to cover everything from pre-ceremony events to the end of the reception. It’s usually better to pay for more coverage if there’s a chance you’ll run over (overtime is usually charged at a higher hourly rate). Make sure to ask this question before booking the photographer.
3. Get post-production details: How many images should I expect? Will they be high resolution or low resolution? Will I be able to get prints made myself, or does the photographer retain the rights to the images? Will the proofs I see be the retouched versions, or does that happen after I select the photos I want? Speaking of retouching, ask about retouching options and special effects.
4.Prep Together: Give the photographer a day-of timeline. You will also need to give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (such as a shot with each of your bridesmaids in addition to wedding party portraits) and let them work! Also, give the photographer a heads up on any family or friendship intricacies they should be aware of (For example, divorced parents, a grandmother that needs to remain sitting for portraits, etc.).
